White Ale

BARENTSZ, BEARS & BEER

WHEN WILLEM BARENTSZ ATTEMPTED TO NAVIGATE THE NORTHEAST PASSAGE, HIS CREW FOUGHT TWIN TERRORS: POLAR BEARS AND FROZEN BEER. OUR WHITE ALE, WITH ITS REFRESHING FRUITY NOTES, IS A TRIBUTE TO THE RESTLESS AND RUGGED SPIRIT THAT KEPT BARENTSZ GOING.

INSPIRATION

WHITE ALE IS A BEER STYLE TYPICAL TO THE LOWLANDS. WE GIVE OURS AN APPEALING TWIST BY SPIKING IT WITH BOTH REFRESHING CITRUS AND FRAGRANT FRUIT.

BREWED WITH:
CURAÇAO ORANGE

THE FLESH OF THIS BITTER ORANGE IS COMPLETELY INEDIBLE BUT THE PEEL CONTAINS WONDERFUL AROMATICS. IT ADDS A MILD CITRUS FLAVOUR AND IS THE INGREDIENT IN OUR CRISP WHITE ALE.

ELDERFLOWER

BREWING WITH THE FRAGRANT BLOSSOM OF THE ELDER PLANT GIVES OUR WHITE ALE ITS SUMMER CHARACTER AND FLORAL, SWEET & FRUITY FLAVOUR.

CHAMOMILE

STEMMING FROM THE GREEK ‘CHAMAI MELON’ MEANING ‘GROUND APPLE’. CHAMOMILE ADDS A CRISP APPLE FLAVOUR AND LIGHT FLORAL CHARACTER TO OUR WHITE ALE.

BEER PAIRING

WILLEM BARENTSZ WAS A DUTCH NAVIGATOR AND ARCTIC EXPLORER. IN 1596 DURING HIS THIRD EXPEDITION TRYING TO FIND A NORTHERN PASSAGE TO THE INDIES, HE BECAME STRANDED ON THE RUSSIAN ISLANDS OF NOVA ZEMBLA WHERE HE AND HIS 15 MEN BECAME PRISONERS OF THE POLAR ICE FOR ALMOST A YEAR.

HIS CREW WERE GREAT BEER LOVERS AND CARPENTERS AND SHELTERED BY BUILDING A SAFE HOUSE MADE FROM PARTS OF THE SHIP, WHICH WAS FOUND LARGELY IN TACT ALMOST THREE HUNDRED YEARS LATER BY A WHALER. HERE THEY SURVIVED ON FOX MEAT; BEAR FAT TO BURN IN LAMPS AND FROZEN BEER, WHICH THEY THAWED IN THE FIRE UNTIL HAVING TO RESORT TO MELTING THE SNOW.

FOLLOWING THE HARSH WINTER, THE CREW SET OFF IN SMALLER BOATS, AND A RUSSIAN MERCHANT VESSEL EVENTUALLY RESCUED 12 MEN. WILLEM BARENSTZ UNFORTUNATELY NEVER MADE IT, AND DIED AT SEA WHILE STUDYING CHARTS.
